Dental Crowns

imageWhen a tooth has been damaged by damage, decay, or endodontic (root canal) therapy, dental crowns can restore its beauty and strength. The caps known as dental crowns go over the entire tooth. In order to prepare the tooth for the dental crown, damaged portions are removed and the tooth is shaped.

DENTAL CROWNS: TYPES

Based on the substance from which they are produced, there are three basic types of Dental Crowns:

  1. Crowns made entirely of metal (Gold, Stainless Steel etc.).
  2. Dental crowns made of porcelain fused to metal (PFM).
  3. Dental crowns made entirely of porcelain.

Metal crowns are the most long-lasting and provide the tightest fit, but they lack aesthetic appeal since they do not match the colour of the teeth. Dental crowns made of porcelain fused to metal (PFM) and all porcelain are both tooth-colored. Dental crowns from PFM provide the best price/quality ratio for longevity and appearance. Where the stresses of eating and grinding are the strongest, posterior teeth are typically restored with PFM dental crowns. The most aesthetically pleasing crowns are made entirely of porcelain, which is typically used on front teeth where strength is less of an issue.
